Material Selection Factors

The choice of fin material is just as important as the type and is primarily driven by the air-side environment:

  • Aluminum: The most common choice. Excellent thermal conductivity, lightweight, and naturally corrosion-resistant due to its protective oxide layer. Used in clean or moderately corrosive atmospheres.
  • Carbon Steel: Used when the process fluid temperature is very high (exceeding the limits of aluminum). It has lower thermal conductivity and will rust rapidly in a moist atmosphere unless protected by a coating (e.g., hot-dip galvanizing).
  • Stainless Steel: Used in highly corrosive environments (coastal, chemical plants) or when the process fluid demands it. It is more expensive and has lower thermal conductivity than aluminum.
  • Copper & Alloys: Excellent thermal conductivity and good corrosion resistance. Often used in extruded fins for water cooling or in specialized chemical applications.
